| This ia a quote from The New Catholic Encyclopedia Volume XV Page 5:
“The Protestant principle is, “The Bible and nothing but the Bible.” The Bible according to them is the sole theological source. There are no “revealed” truths save the truths contained in the Bible. According to them, the Bible is the sole rule of Faith. By It and by It alone should all dogmatic questions be solved. It is the only binding authority. Catholics, on the other hand, hold that there may be, that there is in fact and that there must of necessity, be certain revealed truths apart from those contained in the Bible.” This is a quote from James Cardinal Gibons “Faith of Our Fathers” Pgs 111 & 112 : “Now the Scriptures alone do not contain all the truths which a Christian is bound to believe. Nor do they explicitly enjoin all the duties which he is obliged to practice… We must therefore conclude that the Scripture alone cannot be a sufficient guide and rule of Faith because they do not contain all the truths necessary for Salvation.” |
| In response to my questions about Salvation, I got a ton of questions about catholics. |
The Roman Catholic Church’s Doctrine Regarding Salvation:* paragraph 1257: "The Lord himself affirms that Baptism is necessary for salvation…Baptism is necessary for salvation…The Church does not know of any means other than Baptism that assures entry into eternal beatitude…" paragraph 1129: "The Church affirms that for believers the sacraments of the New Covenant are necessary for salvation." paragraph 2010: "…we can then merit for ourselves and for others the graces needed to attain eternal life…" paragraph 1332: "Holy Mass (Missa), because the liturgy in which the mystery of salvation is accomplished concludes with the sending forth of the faithful…" paragraph 1414: "As sacrifice, the Eucharist is also offered in reparation for the sins of the living and the dead…" * The above quotes are taken from "Catechism of the Catholic Church". In the Catechisms preface, Pope John Paul II says in reference to this Catechism, "The Catechism of the Catholic Church, which I approved June 25th last and the publication of which I today order by virtue of my Apostolic Authority, is a statement of the Church’s faith and of catholic doctrine, attested to or illumined by Sacred Scripture, the Apostolic Tradition, and the Church’s Magisterium. I declare it to be a sure norm for teaching the faith…This catechism is given to them [all the Church’s Pastors and the Christian faithful] that it may be a sure and authentic reference text for teaching catholic doctrine…" |
